OverviewThe After School Movie Programs are 10-20 weeks in length. Each curriculum is designed to teach Grade 5 and 6 students the elements of movie creation. Some programs engage participants in the components of film-making such as acting, camera angle and techniques, sound and video editing, marketing, and presentation. Other programs focus on animation techniques such as light-painting, stop-motion animation, green screen methods, and special effects. Each program will involve hands-on experience with media creation and give students the insight and skills they need to produce their own movie products. The series of mini-lessons and exercises throughout the program will culminate in a final project where students create a short film. Our final class will be a Premier where the groups present their completed production to their peers, parents, guardians, and/or a larger audience.

The Schedule
The After School Movie Program delivers a complete course on movie making and animation by breaking down the various aspects of the skills into weekly mini-lessons. Students have the opportunity to practice the individual skills by working on the various projects throughout the program. Through this spiral of learning and practicing new techniques, students are able to bring all their skills to bear on the final project. Below is an example of a filming schedule used in a 20 week film-making program.
Curriculum Connections
Visual media is a big part of our lives. It is shows, commercials, movies, music videos, documentaries, YouTube clips, and home movies. It is in our social media feeds and in our public spaces. We often do not consider the elements that go into making our visual media. The After School Movie Program is a great precursor to Grade 7 and 8 Technology Education courses. Students will learn to recognize the various tools and techniques that filmmakers employ and will have the opportunity to put them into action. Throughout this exploratory and experiential process students will gain a better appreciation for the visual media that has become so prevalent in our lives. Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to work with their peers on a collaborative project.
Although this is an after school program conducted for those who appreciate the process of making better video, it nevertheless achieves various aspects of the provincial curriculum due to its focus on creativity and communication. Students will use various forms of group and interpersonal communication and learn to respect each other’s point of view. They will appreciate the value of critical and creative thinking. They will be expected to communicate information and ideas effectively and clearly while interacting with sensitivity and respect considering the situation, audience, and purpose. Through extended exploration of film and video media, students will develop an understanding of a form (film and animation, in this case) that requires the use of specific features, structures, and patterns. Through the creation of their own films they will be expected to make informed choices of form, style, and content for specific audiences and purposes.
